Forgive my ignorance, but what is the difference between Deacon and Priest in the Anglican community?
Hey Richard, I hear it's similar to the Roman church, but I've never investigated. In the Anglican world there are 3 orders. First are the Bishops, apostle-like in their role of leading, supervising, uniting the church. Second, the priests, who assist the Bishops in the leadership, missional and pastoral work. And third are the Deacons, who assist Bishops and Priests as directed, and who serve the poor, the sick, etc. A sub-group are Transitional Deacons, who will ultimately be ordained Priests.
Now that I think about it, it's probably the same in many respects. In the Roman setting...
1. Deacons can preach homilies but cannot run a communion service.
2. Priests can run communion services but cannot ordain priests.
3. Bishops can ordain priests.
Does it work like that for Anglicans?
Hi again Richard. In Anglican circles, all that you have said largely applies. I think Deacons can lead a communion service, but not consecrate the elements - therefore they need to be reserved from a previous service, and the liturgy is slightly altered. Also, Deacons cannot pronounce absolution, so again a minor tweak in the liturgy.
