500 KM

500 km in downtown traffic
Not all the 100 km points can be in picturesque parts of the city. Though with any luck the 600 km point will be this Saturday on Goat Creek.

Great Lake Swimmers

Paste and Melissa have turned me onto Great Lake Swimmers a Canadian folk out fit. GLS is giving away two free MP3's from there new Album Ongiara. Just click download at the bottom of the player. Paste gave Ongiara 4.5/5 so you know it's good :) From the review:
Tony Dekker, Erik Arnesen and Colin Huebert create folksy compositions that will likely prompt the label “Americana,” but it seems more accurate to call this starkly evocative and melodically melancholic album “Canadiana.”

400 km Cows!

400 KM Cows
Passed a herd of cows as I made the 400 km mark yesterday. Didn't plan on hitting that till today, but my planed 14 km trail ride turned into 10 km of trail and 23 km of highway riding. The trails we muddy and slow, plus I missed the turn off at about the 7 km mark. It was faster to ride the 23 km on the road than to retrace the 10 km of trail.

SpiderMan 3

Saw it last weekend, I think I enjoyed it more than Jordon, but that's not saying much. Tried to tackle way too much in one movie, trying to wrap up plot lines from movies I & II while introducing Black Spidey/Venom. It really needed to be a TV season like Heroes to pull off what they were trying to do.

In both I & II you got to see inside the mind of the Goblin and Doc Oc as they went mad. If black Spidey was going to work as well, we needed to get the same insight.

Goat Creek Sat June 2nd

Going to do Goat Creek the first Saturday in June. Here's the official trail description:
Goat Creek and Spray River: 19 km one way, elevation gain 360 m (1180 ft) (map)
Trackset Trailhead: Goat Creek trailhead 8 km south of Canmore on the Smith-Dorrien/Spray Trail or Banff Springs Hotel. Description: An easy gradient with lots of river views and plenty of wildlife tracks to test your identification skills. It’s a downhill run from the Goat Creek trailhead if you can arrange transportation.
Plan is to meet at the Alberta tourism centre at the North West End of Canmore for 9 am. The Tourism Center is just south east of the last Canmore exit off the Trans Canada. We'll then head up to the trail head and hope to be on the trail by 10:15. The ride into Banff is 19 km and will take a couple of hours. We stop, talk, take picutres etc. We'll then head back to Canmore via the highway and that's 25km, that will take about an hour and a half. We may break into two groups with hard core folks talking the Rundel Trail back to the Canmore Nordic Center.

We should be back in Canmore by 3 or 4 pm. We'll then dispatch the drivers to get the cars from the trail head and then head out for a bite to eat before heading back into Calgary.

Please let me know if you're coming, need a ride or can offer a ride. I need to know the capacity of vehicles for people and bikes so we can plan leaving a car at the tourism center.

BTW you can view previous Goat Creek Pics.

Tempted, it's enough

Mark 1:12-13
At once the Spirit sent him out into the desert, 13and he was in the desert forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and angels attended him.

It would be easy to fill in the blanks here with what we know of this time from the other Gospel accounts. There is so much to ponder in those details, about Jesus and the nature of evil. Peterson has some wonderful thoughts in The Jesus Way on just those points.

But I'm trying to hear Mark and he gives such a brief account. Can this be enough?

Jesus was tempted by Satan.

I'm tempted.

In the wilderness

The city isn't tame

Angels attended him

Will I notice them here with us?

Maybe with too much detail I miss the connections.

Conspiracy Theories

Today's XKCD webcomic is incredibly funny (and this is one of the funniest out there, if you are at all a math geek, even just tangentally).

You'll be brightening your day and subsequently the day of those you love at least a little bit (*) if you read it here:

Conspiracy Theories

(*) Wow, a hyperlink guilt trip!

Someone to hold on to

I remember thinking how prophetic the line about the sky crushing your car seemed after the San Francisico quake where freeways collapsed on people's cars. Hearing it now post 9/11 and resonates even louder. The Choir, Someone to Hold On To from Wide Eyed Wonder, enjoy.

As Seen on RMR thanks to this hapax legomenon who posted it to mark the passing of his biological father.

Spring Run Off
I was next to Fish Creek as I passed the 200 km mark today, so I stopped to take a picture of the spring run off.

Has Calgary Arived?

There have been a number of local stories that have trumpeted the arrival of Calgary as a major city, we're over a million people, we have a Bentley Dealership, the Prime Minister is from Calgary. I was at Fish Creek station at 5 am this morning, and there were three people sleeping in the corner of the station. Yay! We've arrived.
