I started working on 3rd St early 2004, this bell was on the corner of 3rd and 5th ave sw. People, including me would ring it every once in a while. This spring I noticed the clapper had gone missing. It hasn't been replaced. I don't know if it was vandals or bureaucracy that silenced the bell, but a silent bell is a sad comment on the state of our collective spirit. I'm sure Robert G. Peters for whom the bell is a memorial would not be impressed.

Saw this photo in the Resonate Pool then stumbled on it here again. It is sad indeed. It's like cutting out it's tongue... or heart. Bells were meant to sing out loud.
